Penny Black GB postage stamps for sale. The Penny Black was the first postage stamp to be issued in Great Britain in 1840. It remains the benchmark collectable stamp for all stamp collectors and along with the Penny red are amongst the most popular stamps for philatelists in the world. They can be found relatively cheaply though there are of course rare penny blacks where the cancel, margins and condition and print edition of the stamp makes them very valuable. Most stamp collectors want at least one nice example in their collection.
Because it was the first mass produced postage stamp, it was printed using technology that was constantly developing. As a result, this meant that there are lots of different variations in the finished stamps and because they weren't perforated, they were cut from blocks, many ended up with missing margins (the gap around the stamp) and these are considered to be less perfect by collectors and therefore less valuable. This also meant that penny blacks appear on all sorts of historically exciting letters and documents of the time, again this all adds to its appeal.
